It's Not Magic, It's Science - Ocean Motion
Hi everyone! My name is Marcie Sandine, I’m the Youth Sales Representative at Cedar Point and this will be my 5th season at the park.
I am one of the lucky ones that can honestly say that I love my job. I mean, I get to sell FUN for a living – it doesn’t get much better than that! In my role, I’m responsible for all the youth programming and K-12 school groups that visit Cedar Point each year. From marching bands and choirs to STEM & educational programming and even just regular fun class trips, I cover it all. As a Northeast Ohio native, I’ve got years of memories of visiting the park with classmates, family and friends. My favorite roller coaster is Millennium Force and my favorite park snack is all of them (because why limit yourself to just one?).
Everyone knows that a class trip to Cedar Point is fun, but did you know that it can also be educational? A cool way that we provide learning opportunities is by sharing how the science and technology from some of our partners can make an impact on your visit. One of those is Rockwell Automation, a company that designs and manufactures safety systems and components to keep our rides running safely and smoothly. Our longstanding relationship, on the mechanical side of the park, helped create some natural opportunities to enhance our youth programs. In the past, during our youth events like Engineering Day, we’ve brought in guest speakers from Rockwell Automation to present to thousands of visiting students so they can have the hands-on learning experience from some of the people who know it best.
We are proud and excited to partner with Rockwell Automation and Global STEM Ambassador, Jay Flores, to share with you a five-part video series, It’s Not Magic, It’s Science! In the last year when many schools weren’t able to offer in-person learning, we looked to our partners at Rockwell Automation to assist us in developing content that could be used at home in the world of remote learning. We definitely wanted it to still be FUN and engaging for both students and educators, as well as parents overseeing their child’s virtual classes at home.
These videos can be used in both the in-person and remote settings and believe me when I tell you, they are FUN to watch! Each video consists of 3 parts: the Experiment, the Explanation and the Exploration. In the Experiment segment, you’ll see Jay conduct a real scientific experiment. In the Explanation, he’ll cover the scientific principles and properties involved and in the Exploration, you’ll see the science applied to one of your favorite Cedar Point rides!
We’ll be featuring a new video every few weeks leading up to Opening Day 2021 – May 14, and the first video features a family favorite – Ocean Motion! We hope you have as much fun watching these as we had creating them, and we’ll see you back in a few weeks for our next video!
The full version of the video can be viewed here.
Happy watching!
