Dave Moon’s 90 Years of Fun
Cedar Point welcomes associates near and far who are here to spread smiles and uphold our mission, which at its core is to make people happy. With associates of all different backgrounds and characteristics, we are proud of the diversity within our park, including a man who loves his job even in retirement. We celebrate him as he turns 90 years old!
Dave Moon, a member of the Cedar Point landscaping team, gave me the opportunity to speak with him about his history at the park.
Dave’s story starts in the summer of 1939, when then-8-year-old Dave visited Cedar Point with his mother, older sister and grandmother to have a picnic. The family joined Dave’s cousins who traveled to the park on the Boeckling ferry boat. Since his boyhood, he often visited the park with friends, neighbors and former students. Prior to applying to Cedar Point, Dave taught history for 30 years at Midview High School in Grafton, OH. Following his decision to retire, he stayed at home to take care of his parents, and eventually found his way to Cedar Point.
He’s always had an interest in the landscaping at the park, and one day, when visiting the park in 2015 with a friend, Dave mentioned his desire to work here and his friend replied (lovingly, of course), “Dave, either apply or shut up.” With the help of his family, he applied to the park and was hired soon after. Ever since, he has fallen in love with keeping up the aesthetic of the park.
Dave has witnessed multiple Cedar Point milestones. From the opening of the causeway in 1957, to the creation of Frontier Town, Dave describes Cedar Point’s evolution as physical park growth. He loves the idea of something new coming to the park each year, and he told me the experience is never the same year over year now that the park consistently updates the attractions, culinary options, merchandise and general ambiance. For years, Dave’s favorite attractions have included Thunder Canyon and the now-defunct White Water Landing, and as Cedar Point expanded, Dave grew to enjoy Iron Dragon, Millennium Force and his all-time favorite, the Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad.
When looking back at his 6 years at the park, Dave stated that what led him to stay at the park was his co-workers, especially Martha Beverick, Cedar Point’s head of landscaping. He said the kindness she has shown for him makes Cedar Point feel like home. The Cedar Point Team thanks him for all of his dedication and wishes him the best on his 90th birthday!
